Rest for the Weary—Jesus’ Open Invitation
Scripture: Matthew 11:28
Key Insight: Christ offers rest for the weary.
Introduction:
Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt like a walking “to-do” list. Jesus has something to say about that: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (ESV). It’s not just a spa day He’s offering—it’s soul-deep rest that can’t be found anywhere else.
Reflection:
Life has a way of piling on stress, and we tend to pile on more by trying to handle it all ourselves. But Jesus doesn’t say, “Come to me, and I’ll give you more to do.” He promises rest—real rest. The kind that revives your heart and reminds you that you’re not in this alone.
When you come to Jesus, it’s like handing over a heavy backpack you’ve been lugging around for miles. He takes the load, and in exchange, gives you peace. Why carry what you don’t have to?
What Does REAP Mean?
Unpacking rest in Scripture:
- Reflect: What burdens are you carrying today?
- Examine: How does Jesus describe the rest He gives?
- Apply: Where can you let go and trust Jesus with the heavy lifting?
- Pray: Ask Jesus to take your burdens and fill you with His rest.
To Do Next: Write down one thing that’s weighing on you today. Pray about it, and give it to Jesus, trusting Him to carry it for you.
Reflective Questions:
- What’s the heaviest burden you’re carrying right now?
- How does it feel to know Jesus invites you to find rest in Him?
Devotional Questions:
- What would it look like to truly rest in Jesus today?
- How can you help someone else find rest in Him?
I saw this short that Kelly Kopp did and it really struck a chord with me. He is an awesome Pastor and is on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. He doesn't look like a traditional Pastor, but then again neither did Jesus! Hope you like this one!
Prayer:
Jesus, I’m tired of carrying these burdens on my own. Thank You for inviting me to find rest in You. Teach me to trust You with everything and embrace the peace You offer. Amen.
