Choosing Humility—The Heart of a Servant

Choosing Humility—The Heart of a Servant

Scripture: Philippians 2:3-4

Key Insight: Value others above yourself, forging Christ-like humility.

Introduction:

In a world that loves to say, “Look out for number one,” Philippians 2:3-4 flips the script: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (ESV). Ouch. That’s not easy, but it’s powerful.

Reflection:

Humility isn’t about thinking less of yourself—it’s about thinking of yourself less. It’s choosing to serve others, not because they “deserve” it, but because it reflects Jesus. And let’s be real—some people make this harder than others (looking at you, that one coworker).
The beauty of humility is that it frees you from the exhausting task of self-promotion. When you focus on lifting others up, you’ll find that God takes care of you in ways you never expected.

What Does REAP Mean?

Serving through Scripture:

  • Reflect: How does this verse challenge your view of humility?
  • Examine: How did Jesus model humility in His life?
  • Apply: What’s one way you can put others first today?
  • Pray: Ask God to help you embrace humility and serve others with joy.

Daily REAP Instruction: Think of one person in your life who could use some encouragement or help. Pray for them and take one step to serve them today.

Reflective Questions:

  • How can humility change the way you approach relationships?
  • When have you experienced joy from putting someone else first?

Devotional Questions:

  • What’s one way you can reflect Jesus’ humility this week?
  • How can serving others deepen your faith?

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You for showing me what true humility looks like. Help me to value others as You do and serve them with a heart like Yours. Teach me to trust that in putting others first, You’ll always provide what I need. Amen.
